A full team of experts available to you & your baby

The Center for Women and Infants at University of Louisville Hospital maintains a full team of experts in-house, 24 hours a day. Our experts include:

  • anesthesiologists
  • obstetricians
  • pediatricians
  • nurses (delivery and infant care specialists)
  • support staff around the clock

Unmatched newborn care

In addition, our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is one of the largest in the region. With its experienced staff and leading-edge technology, the NICU provides superior care for premature and seriously ill infants.

The first hours of life for your newborn are extremely important. So one of our experienced pediatricians will perform a complete examination of your baby within 24 hours of birth and before discharge from the hospital.

Our pediatric staff is made up of physicians from UofL Pediatrics. They are all faculty members of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Each is committed to providing your baby with the highest level of care.

Upon discharge, our care coordinators can help ensure that records of your child’s initial examination and hospital stay are promptly sent to your personal pediatrician.

Extras that make the difference

Families need time to get to know their newest member. So all post-partum rooms at University Hospital are private and newborns may stay in their mother’s room. Family members are also welcome to stay overnight. Rooms are equipped with comfortable, convertible beds.

Other extras include:

  • free monthly pre-natal classes
  • free parking for expectant parents and frequents visitors to the NICU
  • free assistance to obtain a birth certificate and Social Security number

Regional clinical care

As one of the largest NICUs in the region, we are committed to working alongside other newborn nurseries throughout the state to provide expert care especially to those who are seriously ill or were born prematurely.

With the start of the regional clinical care initiative in 2007, the Louisville area is no longer the only one to benefit from our newborn expertise. Hospitals and health centers throughout Kentucky are partnered with us in an effort to care for all newborns, no matter the situation.
